Get Real About Business Card Design

Ever picked up a copy of one of those “Best of Business Card Design” books? The ones filled with glossy photos of business cards made of “special materials” using “innovative printing techniques”? While I admit it can be fun – and occasionally instructive – to peruse these award-winning business card designs, I think these books often confuse more business owners than they help.

How?

By fostering the notion that a business card has to be radically different, trendy and expensive to be effective.

It’s time to get real!

“Cool” doesn’t sell your product. “Trendy” doesn’t pay the bills. And “Wow, what a great card!” is flattering, but hardly an income guarantee. Ever seen one of those expensive Super Bowl TV ads, where afterwards you can remember the commercial but haven’t the foggiest idea what product it was promoting?

Same principle. A business card can be a masterpiece of graphic design and do you absolutely no good as far as convincing someone you just met to give you a call, visit your website or drop by your store.

The truth is that a fairly ordinary business card can be an extraordinary marketing tool, if used wisely.

Now don’t get me wrong – I am not advocating the use of a generic, black-text-on-white-stock, flimsy card ordered from the local quick printer, or an attractive but ad-supported “free” business card ordered online. And splurging on a custom designed business card is definitely appropriate in certain industries and certain business situations.

What I’m saying is that an attractive, legible, customer-focused business card is good enough for most people in most circumstances. Even if it’s designed on a website that offers business card templates which can be used by an unlimited number of other business owners. Even if the graphics or clipart aren’t original.

Frankly, it’s more important to get a decent card circulating than it is to let customers slip by while you’re endlessly tweaking the perfect” business card.

So what is good enough”?

Your business card should be attractive. It should look professional, be of standard size and weight, use color well, catch the eye, and be different enough from your competitors to make your card stand out but not so different that you seem out of touch.

Your business card should be legible. No tiny text. No crazy mish-mash of fonts. No crossed-out phone numbers or dingy food stains. Each word should be there for a reason, carefully chosen to given recipients a reason to remember you and encourage them to use your product or service.

This means that business cards should also be customer-focused. Though a business card contains your company name and contact information, its purpose is less about you than it is about showing your prospective customer that you understand their needs and that your company can meet them.

A business card design that is good enough” may look little different than those used by others in similar professions. But if it goes beyond the typical business card to include information that reassures or informs prospects (such as testimonials, store hours, special services or solutions to common problems), it will certainly out-perform a fancier but less customer-centered card.

And let’s also get real” about what a business card is, and what it can do. Yes, it’s a powerful marketing weapon. But c’mon, it’s a 2.5″ by 3.25″ bit of paper. No piece of paper, no matter how innovative or elegant, can override a prospects’ instinctive distaste of a salesperson who’s arrogant, uncaring, or completely clueless. You may find that people love your card and that you just can’t seem to keep enough of them in your wallet but if you never hear from the people you give them to, there’s something wrong.

After all, there are plenty of superstar performers using bland, impersonal company-generated business cards with outstanding results.

In the hands of a personable and articulate company representative who really listens to what a prospective client wants, a good enough” business card will outperform a graphic designer’s dream card every time.

Your Business Card Should Be Your Best Salesman

One of the most important building blocks of a good marketing plan is your business card. It is far and away the most likely item to find its way into the hands of your most important business contacts. And it is the one thing that is likely to remain when all your other marketing materials are long gone.

In other words, your business card is much more than just a piece of paper with your name, address and phone number printed on it. It is a powerful sales tool. And it should be designed with that purpose in mind.

What can a business card do for your business?

Before asking the inevitable questions about the design of your business card, you should ask what its function in your overall marketing plan is supposed to be. A properly designed business card has at least four important marketing functions. Here they are:

1. It helps you to introduce your company.
2. It provides critical contact information about you or your company.
3. It conveys your most important sales message.
4. It communicates your corporate image.

An introduction to your company

This may seem obvious, but think about it for a minute. Think of your business card as a tool for opening doors. Think of yourself at a meeting, or even at a social event. What better way to introduce yourself to a person than to hand them your card?

I’m not talking about shoving your card on people who don’t want it. I’m talking about using your card as a tool to make useful connections with people who are likely to appreciate the introduction.

This suggests you should think of appropriate introductory “openers” to accompany your card. For instance, say you’re at a business connections meeting. Since the purpose of the meeting is to meet people and do “networking”, you might try a simple card swap strategy: “Hi, I’m Harriet Phillips. I’m swapping business cards with as many people as I can. Here’s my card. May I have one of yours for my contact file?”

Every situation will be a bit different, but the function of the card remains the same: it provides you with an excuse to introduce your business to people who might be able to use your services.

Provide critical contact information on your card

Before you put your card into the hands of prospects, you want to make sure it communicates the most important things about you and your company.

Deciding what information is “critical” will vary from situation to situation. The basics are pretty obvious: your name, your company name, your business address, and the most effective way for people to get hold of you ? probably your telephone number and email address.

Rather than putting your cell or pager number on all your cards, you might make a point of writing it on the card when you think it is appropriate: “Here, I’ll give you my cell number, just in case you can’t reach me at my office number.” That gives the impression you’re giving this person special treatment.

Include Your Most Important Sales Message

Even more important than giving prospects your basic contact information is conveying your Most Important Sales Message. According to Cesar Crespo of Free Card Business Card Opportunities, “Business people often miss a golden opportunity to make their business card a powerful sales tool. Our clients are often surprised at how much more effective we can make their cards.”

If you don’t have a “Most Important Sales Message”, you should create one. It is a brief, succinct statement of what your company is about. Sometimes this kind of answer is called an “elevator speech”. You’re on an elevator and somebody asks you “What does your company do?” You have six or seven seconds to give a memorable reply. Good elevator speeches go beyond hackneyed answers like “We do web marketing” or “We make bowling balls.” They are confidence-inspiring marketing statements: “We create websites that sell tons of products for people.” or “We make the world’s most beautiful bowling balls.”

Your MISM (Most Important Sales Message) will often be a “product” (as in the bowling ball example above), but it should always be accompanied by a “pitch” of some kind or another. Often this will be what we usually think of as a slogan.

For your elevator speech you need a seven second slogan. For your business card you will need the same slogan in four or five words at the most. It must be boiled down to an string of words that not only sounds good, but looks good on the card: “Websites that Sell Like Crazy”, “The World’s Most Beautiful Bowling Balls”, “The Discount Real Estate Guy”, “The Source for Cottages and Summer Homes”, “Beautiful Color Vinyl Banners.”

Be Consistent with your Corporate Image

Finally, make your card consistent with your corporate image and the rest of your marketing materials. Usually this boils down to basic things like your choice of colors, typeface, and layout style. And of course you will want to include your company logo.

Usually your marketing consultant or graphic designer will want to plaster your logo on all your marketing materials, using the logo as a substitute for real marketing design. “We must convey a consistent corporate image” is the usual mantra. What ever you do, don’t ask “Why?” That question opens the way for tedious theorizing about “the long term importance of developing a corporate image.”

You would be better to agree. “Yes, by all means, we want to present a consistent corporate image.” And then add, “But I want this card to do some selling for me, so I would like to give the sales message a bit more prominence than usual.”

In other words, use the usual corporate colors, typeface and layout style. Include the logo too. But give prominence to the sales message. Show a picture of your product. Or if you think you are the product (as most real estate agents seem to think), then include your own picture. But don’t forget to enhance the photo with that slogan we talked about in the previous section.

And now that you have a killer card, get out there and start handing them out.

How To Know If Your Business Card Stinks

If your business card isn’t doing what it’s supposed to do helping the receiver remember you in a desirable way, leaving behind a strong, positive impression of you, your company and your product or service then it’s a failure. It stinks.

And if you’re reading this article, it probably does. Stink, that is.

Wonder how can I make that prediction, without ever having seen your business card?

Two reasons.

First reason. People keep business cards that have value business cards that, in their minds, have information on a person or product or service that they find interesting or that they think they’ll need. It only makes sense, right?

In my opinion, such a business card may be ugly or cheap or ordinary but if someone chooses to keep it (for legitimate business reasons, not for scratch paper), it doesn’t stink”.

However, the vast majority of business cards are thrown away almost immediately. According to research I’ve seen, more than 90% of business cards are thrown away the same day they’re received. Less than 1% of business cards are kept more than thirty days.

True, some people throw business cards away because they save the information on them in an alternate format (such as an electronic business card scanner), but most are pitched because they’re of no value to the recipient.

In other words, they stink. They’re crappy. They’re literally worthless.

Reason two to believe your business card stinks.

I have no statistical data to back this up, but I’ve often noticed that many business people seem to be nervous or embarrassed when they’re actually at the point of handing someone their business card.

Maybe Ms. Business is having a great conversation with a potential customer. She’s really excited and enthused about the newest Wonder Widget her company manufactures, and her prospect is smiling and looking interested. But something happens when it’s time for her to hand over the company business card.

She grimaces. She hesitates. Her tone of voice changes. She makes some sort of offhand remark like Well, here’s my business card.” Instead of eagerly, confidently giving someone this outstanding example of their company’s professionalism and credentials, this awesome, amazing business card her whole posture and demeanor conveys a sense of embarrassment.

Or maybe you’ve felt it yourself a mental twinge, or an inner voice that says Maybe he won’t be impressed” or My card isn’t as good as my competitor’s” when the time comes for you to give someone your business card. Instead of giving someone your company card with poise and assurance, you feel reluctant to actually let someone else see it… and judge it.

After all, that card is your baby. Maybe you were instrumental in the creation of the card. Maybe you’ve had the business card so long that you’ve become attached to it. Either way, if someone throws that business card away, or casually stuffs it into their pants pocket without even looking at it, it feels like rejection. If they don’t appreciate the card, they don’t appreciate YOU.

So… if you’re worried that your business card stinks, so worried that you cannot hand it out without fearing that it will be found wanting, and if you haven’t had enough positive reactions to reassure you that your fears are groundless… it probably does.

Of course, there are objective criteria to use when evaluating a business cards’… er, stink factor”. And varying degrees of stinkiness.”

For example, business cards that are overcrowded, stink. Business cards that give you no idea what product or service you offer, stink. Business cards that waste the space on the back side of the card may not stink, but they’re certainly being underutilized.

And business cards that aren’t kept, remembered, and used by your customers or prospects, stink.
